FENCE QUOTE
FAQ

Everything you need to know about getting a fence quote, pricing, materials, and working with a contractor through contractor-finder.ca.

Our instant quotes are estimated within ±10–15% of the final installed price. They're calculated using your actual lot dimensions (pulled from satellite/parcel data), real contractor labour rates for your region, and current material costs. The final confirmed price comes after your free on-site inspection, where a licensed contractor measures the exact fence run and confirms any site-specific factors like slopes, tree roots, or existing posts.
Our all-in installed rate covers everything needed to complete the fence: posts (4×4 or 6×6 depending on package), concrete for setting posts, fence boards or panels, hardware, and labour. The only items priced separately are gates (each gate is an add-on), and removal/disposal of an existing fence on replace jobs. No hidden fees.
In Ontario, neighbours sharing a property line fence can legally split the cost 50/50 under the Line Fences Act. Toggle the split option in the quote tool and it will show your half of the total. You'll need to confirm the arrangement with your neighbour — the contractor will build the fence regardless, but billing can be structured accordingly. Your contractor can advise on how to handle this with your specific neighbour.
Labour rates vary across Canada. Our tool uses GTA/Vaughan rates as a baseline (since that's where our contractors are headquartered) and applies regional multipliers based on your postal code. For example, downtown Toronto is ~5% higher than GTA suburbs, while Northern Ontario runs ~18% lower. Vancouver is slightly higher than GTA. These adjustments reflect real contractor market rates in each area.
All three packages use a 6 ft height and include posts, concrete, boards, and labour:

Good — Standard ($75/ft): Pressure-treated wood with 4×4 posts. Most affordable, 15–20 yr lifespan. Great value for most backyards.

Better — Premium ($87/ft): Pressure-treated wood with heavier 6×6 posts. Stronger, more rigid fence with longer lifespan (20–25 yrs). Most popular choice.

Best — Executive ($100/ft): Vinyl or composite panels with 6×6 posts. Zero maintenance, never rots or needs painting, 25–30 yr lifespan. Higher upfront cost but lowest lifetime cost.
A properly installed pressure-treated wood fence in Ontario typically lasts 15–25 years, depending on post size, soil conditions, and maintenance. Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles are hard on fence posts — this is why 6×6 posts outperform 4×4 in the long run. Applying a stain or sealant every 2–3 years significantly extends lifespan. Vinyl fencing avoids all of this and lasts 25–30+ years with no upkeep.
Most municipalities in Ontario do not require a permit for a standard 6 ft residential fence in a backyard. However, rules vary by city — Vaughan, Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton each have their own fence bylaws governing maximum height, setbacks from the property line, and materials. Fences near pools always require a permit. Your assigned contractor will confirm permit requirements for your specific address before starting work.
Completely free — no credit card, no account, no obligation. contractor-finder.ca operates on a commission-only model: our contractors pay us a small referral fee only if and when a job is completed. You never pay us anything. If you get a quote and decide not to proceed, that's totally fine — zero pressure.
Your quote is shown immediately on screen and emailed to you. Within 1 business day, a licensed fencing contractor in your area will reach out to confirm your details and schedule a free on-site inspection. At the inspection they'll measure the exact run, check for any challenges (slopes, roots, existing structures), and give you a firm final price. No pressure, no obligation to proceed.
Yes. Every contractor in our network is verified, licensed, and carries liability insurance before we refer any jobs to them. We also collect reviews and monitor job completion rates to keep quality high. If you're ever unsatisfied with a contractor's work, contact us directly and we'll make it right.
The side fence runs from the rear corner of whichever house extends furthest back to the rear property line. On a typical GTA subdivision lot, this means starting at the back wall of your house and running straight to the back of your property. We calculate this as: lot depth − house depth − front setback. This avoids overquoting the full lot depth (which would include the space under your house). The exact measurement is confirmed at your on-site inspection.
Most residential fence jobs are completed in 1–2 days. A standard backyard (back + both sides, roughly 120–160 linear ft) is typically done in a single day by a 2-person crew. Larger jobs, difficult terrain, or jobs requiring removal of an existing fence may take 2 days. Concrete for post footings needs 24–48 hours to cure before full tension is applied to the fence boards.
It's strongly recommended. If you don't have a survey pin or know your exact property lines, your contractor can help identify them using available lot surveys. Building a fence even a few inches onto a neighbour's property can create legal and relationship issues. If there's any doubt, a registered land surveyor can locate your pins for ~$300–$500 — well worth it before a $5,000+ fence install.
Sloped yards add complexity and cost. There are two approaches: stepped fencing (fence panels step down the slope in sections — most common) or raked/parallel fencing (panels follow the slope continuously — better for gentle grades). Steep slopes may require extra posts, longer boards, or grading. This is assessed at your on-site inspection and any adjustment to the quote will be explained clearly before work begins.
