📐

WHY OUR PRICING IS ACCURATE

Most online "cost calculators" for interlock and concrete use national averages that bear no resemblance to what contractors actually charge in Ontario. Our pricing ranges were built in direct collaboration with the contractors in our network — experienced professionals who've been installing driveways, patios, and hardscaping across the GTA and Canada for years.

Interlock pricing varies significantly based on base preparation depth, existing material removal, slope and grading, edge restraint type, pattern complexity, and material grade. Concrete pricing varies based on thickness, reinforcement (rebar vs wire mesh), finish type, and access to the site. Our Good / Better / Best tiers reflect the real spread across all of these factors — so you know what you're looking at before anyone steps on your property.

Everything homeowners ask before getting started. Click any question to expand. Use the filters to jump straight to what you need.

Platform Is this quote tool really free for homeowners?
Yes — 100% free for homeowners, with no hidden fees, ever. Contractor-Finder.ca operates on a commission-only model: contractors pay us a small percentage only when a job is completed and closed. You never pay us anything at any stage — not for the quote, not for the consultation, not for the referral.
Platform How are the contractors on your platform vetted?
Every contractor in our network must be licensed, insured, and have a verified track record of completed projects in hardscaping and concrete work. We work with a curated group of specialists — not a directory of thousands of unvetted tradespeople. Our contractors are industry leaders who've installed driveways, patios, retaining walls, and pool surrounds across the GTA and Canada for years. We keep the network tight and the bar high.
Pricing How much does interlock typically cost in the GTA?
Interlock pricing in the GTA typically ranges from $18–$35+ per square foot installed, depending on material grade, base preparation depth, pattern complexity, and site conditions. As a rough guide:
  • Standard interlock driveway (600–800 sq ft): CA$12,000–22,000
  • Mid-grade interlock patio (300–500 sq ft): CA$8,000–16,000
  • Premium natural stone or large-format pavers: CA$28–55+ per sq ft
These are all-in installed prices including base preparation, compacted granular, edge restraints, sand setting bed, and cleanup. Final pricing is confirmed after a free on-site measure.
Pricing How much does a concrete driveway cost in Ontario?
Concrete driveways in Ontario typically cost $10–$22 per square foot installed, depending on thickness, finish type, reinforcement, and whether existing asphalt or concrete needs to be removed. A standard two-car concrete driveway:
  • Broom finish (plain): CA$7,000–13,000
  • Exposed aggregate: CA$9,000–16,000
  • Stamped concrete: CA$12,000–22,000+
Removal of existing driveway material adds CA$1,500–4,000 depending on type and size.
Pricing Why is there a price range instead of one exact number?
Because no two properties are identical. The range reflects real variation based on existing base conditions, depth of excavation required, site access, slope and grading, drainage needs, material availability, and pattern complexity. The lower end assumes straightforward flat conditions with good access; the higher end accounts for challenging grades, tight access, or premium material selections. An on-site measure tightens this to one fixed number.
Pricing Do your estimates include removal of the existing driveway or patio?
Our base estimates assume a new installation on a prepared or existing base. If you have existing asphalt, concrete, interlock, or other material that needs to be broken up and hauled away, this is typically quoted as a separate line item. Expect to add CA$1,500–4,500 for removal depending on the material type, thickness, and total area. Your contractor will include this in the written quote at the on-site consultation.
Materials What's the difference between interlock and concrete for a driveway?
Both are excellent long-term choices, but they behave differently:
  • Interlock (paving stones): Individual units that flex slightly — this means freeze-thaw cycles in Ontario winters cause far less cracking. Individual stones can be replaced if damaged. Higher upfront cost, virtually zero cracking, easier long-term repairs, premium aesthetic.
  • Concrete: Monolithic slab — more prone to cracking over time in Ontario's climate but significantly cheaper. Exposed aggregate and stamped finishes offer excellent curb appeal. Repairs are more involved when cracking occurs.
  • Asphalt: Most affordable, but requires sealing every 3–5 years and has a shorter lifespan in premium neighbourhoods.
For most GTA homeowners, interlock is the long-term investment and concrete the middle-ground option.
Materials What concrete finishes are available and what do they cost?
The four most common concrete finishes in Ontario:
  • Broom finish: Standard brushed texture — the most affordable option, slip-resistant, clean look. ~CA$10–14/sq ft.
  • Exposed aggregate: Surface is washed to reveal the stone aggregate beneath — very popular in Ontario for driveways and patios. Durable, textured, low-maintenance. ~CA$13–18/sq ft.
  • Stamped concrete: Surface is imprinted with a pattern (cobblestone, slate, wood plank, etc.) and can be coloured. High aesthetic impact at lower cost than stone. ~CA$18–28/sq ft.
  • Smooth/trowel finish: Used primarily for garage floors, basement floors, and some patios. Not recommended for exterior driveways as it can become slippery when wet.
Materials What types of interlock pavers are available?
The most common interlock options installed across the GTA:
  • Standard concrete pavers: The workhorse — durable, wide colour range, most cost-effective. Brands like Unilock, Permacon, and Cambridge are common.
  • Tumbled or aged pavers: Same as above but with a worn, old-world texture. Popular for traditional or cottage-style homes.
  • Large-format slabs: 24"x24" or larger — modern, clean aesthetic. Higher material and labour cost due to weight and precision setting required.
  • Natural stone (granite, limestone, flagstone): Premium option — every piece is unique, extremely durable, highest cost. ~CA$28–55/sq ft installed.
  • Porcelain pavers: Thin, highly durable, frost-resistant, very low maintenance. Growing in popularity for patios and pool surrounds. ~CA$22–40/sq ft installed.
Materials How thick should a concrete driveway be in Ontario?
For a residential driveway that sees regular vehicle traffic in Ontario's freeze-thaw climate, the standard is 4 inches (100mm) minimum with a well-compacted granular base of at least 6 inches. For driveways that see heavier vehicles (trucks, RVs), 5–6 inches is recommended. Reinforcement with rebar or wire mesh is standard practice and helps control cracking. Never hire a contractor who proposes less than 4 inches for a driveway — it will crack prematurely.
Process What happens after I submit my contact information?
A licensed contractor from our network will contact you within 1 business day to review your quote selections. If you'd like to proceed, they'll schedule a free on-site measure and consultation. At that visit they'll assess existing conditions, take exact measurements, discuss design and material options, and provide a final written quote. There is no obligation to proceed at any point.
Process How long does a typical driveway or patio installation take?
It varies by scope, but as a general guide:
  • Interlock driveway (600–800 sq ft): 3–5 days including excavation, base, and installation
  • Interlock patio (300–400 sq ft): 2–3 days
  • Concrete driveway: 1–2 days pour, then 7 days curing before light traffic, 28 days before full vehicle traffic
  • Retaining wall: 2–5 days depending on height and length
  • Combined driveway + walkway + patio: 5–10 days
Scheduling lead time varies by season — spring and early fall are peak season in Ontario and contractors book up fast. Getting your quote in early secures your spot.
Process What is the best time of year to install interlock or concrete in Ontario?
The ideal season is late spring through early fall (May–October) when ground temperatures are consistently above 5°C. Concrete should never be poured when temperatures are below 5°C as it affects the curing process. Interlock can technically be installed in cooler weather as long as the ground isn't frozen, but most contractors prefer working in warmer months for optimal compaction. Book in winter or early spring to get on a contractor's schedule for the season — spots fill quickly.
Permits Do interlock driveways or concrete patios require a permit in Ontario?
For most standard driveways and patios, no permit is required in Ontario municipalities. However, permits are commonly required for:
  • Retaining walls over 1 metre (3.3 ft) in height — structural permit required in most municipalities
  • Grading changes that affect drainage to neighbouring properties
  • Work within a specified distance of a property line (setback rules vary by municipality)
  • Driveways that require curb cuts to a municipal road
Your contractor will advise on permit requirements at the on-site consultation. All contractors in our network handle permit applications on your behalf when required.
Permits Do I need approval from my municipality to change my driveway material?
In most Ontario municipalities, replacing your driveway with the same footprint using a different material does not require a permit. However, widening your driveway, adding a second curb cut, or paving over a previously unpaved surface may require approval. Some municipalities also have rules about the maximum percentage of your front yard that can be hard-surfaced (to manage stormwater runoff). Your contractor will flag anything relevant during the on-site consultation.
Maintenance Does interlock need to be sealed and how often?
Sealing is recommended but not mandatory. A quality interlock sealer does several things: it enhances and locks in colour, hardens the polymeric sand in the joints (reducing weed growth and ant intrusion), and makes the surface easier to clean. Most contractors recommend sealing 1–2 years after installation (to allow the pavers to settle and the polymeric sand to fully cure), then every 3–5 years after that depending on traffic and sun exposure. Expect to pay CA$0.80–1.50 per sq ft for professional sealing.
Maintenance How do I prevent weeds growing through interlock?
The main defence against weeds is polymeric sand — a joint sand mixed with a polymer binder that hardens when wet, locking the joints and preventing weed germination. All quality interlock installations use polymeric sand. Over time (5–10+ years), the sand can wash out and joints open up, allowing weeds in. The fix is straightforward: re-sanding the joints with fresh polymeric sand, typically done at the same time as sealing. Sealing also helps lock existing polymeric sand in place.
Maintenance Can concrete driveways crack in Ontario winters and what can be done?
Cracking in concrete is common in Ontario due to repeated freeze-thaw cycles — water gets into micro-pores, freezes, expands, and stresses the surface. The best defences are:
  • Proper base preparation: A well-compacted granular base minimises heaving
  • Correct thickness: 4 inches minimum, 5–6 inches for heavy use
  • Control joints: Saw-cut grooves that encourage the concrete to crack in straight, controlled lines rather than randomly
  • Sealing: A quality penetrating concrete sealer applied every 2–3 years repels water and road salt damage significantly
  • Avoid de-icing salts: Road salt (calcium chloride, sodium chloride) is very damaging to concrete surfaces — use sand instead in the first 1–2 winters
Small cracks (hairline) are normal and cosmetic. Large structural cracks are usually the result of poor base prep or insufficient thickness.
Maintenance How long do interlock and concrete driveways last?
With a proper installation and reasonable maintenance:
  • Interlock pavers: 25–50+ years. Individual stones can be replaced, so the system is effectively indefinite with proper upkeep.
  • Exposed aggregate or stamped concrete: 20–35 years before significant refinishing or replacement is needed.
  • Plain broom-finish concrete: 15–30 years depending on climate exposure and salt use.
  • Asphalt: 15–25 years with regular sealing every 3–5 years.
The biggest lifespan factor for any hardscaping is base preparation — a contractor who cuts corners on the base is the leading cause of premature failure regardless of surface material.
